Obtaining a Danish Passport

Obtaining a Danish passport

To hold a Danish passport you must have Danish citizenship. Passports cannot be issued to persons with a Danish grandparent or parent unless the applicant is a Danish citizen in his/her own right.

Getting or renewing a Danish passport

Please contact your nearest Danish Consulate (click here for addresses). If you live reasonably close to a Danish Consulate, you should visit the Consulate in person, bringing with you evidence of Danish citizenship, e.g. a birth certificate showing the names and nationality of your parents, or a certificate of naturalisation. If you already hold a Danish passport, that is sufficient evidence of Danish citizenship and no other documents are required.

If you live far away from a Danish Consulate, it may be possible to apply for, or renew, a passport by mail. The Consulate concerned will make that decision. In cases where the application can be made by mail, the necessary documents and instructions will be sent to you. To download the passport application form, please click here.

You will be required to complete a passport application form in duplicate, and supply two passport photographs (45mm x 35mm). The requirements for Danish passport photos are the same as they are for New Zealand passport photos. They must be taken face-on. No smiling and no headgear please!

You must also sign a signature card using a black 0.8mm pen or a black biro. The application forms, photos and the signature card are returned to the Danish Consulate concerned, together with a cheque for the appropriate fee.

Danish passports issued since 1 August 2006 are of the biometric type. If you hold a biometric passport, or a machine readable passport issued after 1 March 1997 you can travel to the USA without a visa.

The fees for issuing a Danish passport are as follows:
  • Under 18 years of age: NZ$45
For applicants under 5 years the validity is two years.
For applicants 5 – 17 years, the passport is valid for five years

  • 18 - 64 years: NZ$240
The validity of the passport is 10 years

  • 65 years and over: NZ$135
The validity of the passport is 10 years

Children and Danish passports

Children now require their own separate passports. The application process is the same as that described above. Children and young persons under 18 years of age require the consent of their parents to have a passport issued.

Those who have custody of the child must sign the consent section in the passport application form on page 3. If a parent has sole custody of the child, evidence for this must be submitted.

Where is the passport produced and how long does it take?

Danish passports are produced in Copenhagen. The turn-around time is usually 4 - 6 weeks.
